BskyB wins rights to Premier League Football on mobiles

BSkyB has won the right to show Premier League football on mobiles. The three-year deal, starting from the 2007/8 season, also involves the Sun and News of the World, which will jointly market and promote the services.

As well as highlights, the deal allows goals and key moments to be shown while games are in progress.

Rights for TV and online had already been snapped up for around £2bn, and the Premier League had been hoping for similarly big bucks from an auction for mobile rights among the networks.

In practice though it’s likely to see only around £10m from mobile; access to match highlights is no longer the only game in town, and many users prefer news alerts and club-specific services. Some operators also offer SkySports News as a streamed mobile TV channel.
