NOKIA 6120 CLASSIC

The name says it all: this is a classic bit of Nokia design, a bar phone with exemplary build quality

Styling is conservative but effective – a bit flashy with all that chrome and ivory white (or shiny black) on view, but there’s a nice keyboard (though the soft keys could be a bit closer to the corresponding labels on the screen) and a well defined D-type navigation pad. The screen is another of Nokia’s good ones, with strong, rich colours and very precise definition even on small text.

Function-wise, it’s loaded. Quadband connectivity plus 3G plus HSDPA; Two 2mp cameras, the main one with 4x digital zoom, flash, and panorama mode – not up to N95 standard, but still capable of high-quality photographs. The second camera, situated on the front of the phone, serves well enough in receiving and making video calls; the video resolution on this one is restricted to 176x144, the main one can do 320x240 – not great, but not bad. A big plus goes to Nokia’s preloaded ‘how to’ guides and the setup wizard which can have the user’s email and internet access up and running in minutes.

Other nice touches include the hot-swappable microSD memory card (none supplied, though), the ability to transfer files to and from a PC even when the SIM card has been removed, Nokia’s great FM radio, and a decent music player with a 3.5mm headphone jack actually on the handset body.

Emails can have attachments, and the applications folder includes QuickOffice for viewing MS Office documents as well as a PDF viewer. The whole thing is of course powered by the S60 operating system...

In use the 6120 turned out to be a great performer – call performance was really excellent, and the hands-free works as well as the 6233’s.

• Classic but not old-fashioned. A good bet for the business user
