Chess CEO Wins Technology Award

David Pollock, Chief Executive of Alderley Edge based Business Telecoms Company, Chess plc, has been named Ernst & Young’s Northern Region Technology & Communication Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.

Selected from four finalists, Pollock was presented with his award at Manchester’s Hilton hotel by previous winner – Dylan Thwaites of search marketing company - Latitude.

Judges singled Pollock out, describing him as ‘an impressive entrepreneur, who has built a well structured, successful entrepreneurial business that has adapted as it has grown.’ Chess’ sustainability was evident by Chess’ strong managerial team and motivated and focused staff.

Chess was established in 1993 and has adapted and diversified to fit changing markets and opportunities. It has enjoyed significant growth in recent years; both organically and via acquisition, and it looks set to continue with ambitious plans for 100 per cent year on year growth.

Mark Otty, Chairman of Ernst & Young identified a characteristic shared by the finalists in all categories. “It is vision that has enabled these entrepreneurs to see the possibilities when nobody else could,” he said. “To spot the gap. To see the niche. Ultimately, to see the opportunity.”

Pollock said, of winning the award, “This is not something I view as a personal accomplishment but rather recognition of the entrepreneurial spirit and hard work of all Chess people. Our vision is to be the choice for business voice and data services - to be an example to other businesses of great people development and exceptional customer service. I believe our people to be our best asset and it is through them and the unique culture we have in Chess that we have achieved this prestigious award.”
