CWU Welcome Queen’s Speech

CWU deputy general secretary (telecoms) Andy Kerr welcomed the inclusion of the Digital Economy Bill in the Queen’s speech today

Kerr said: "The UK needs a world-class digital network infrastructure that benefits all citizens and consumers and the introduction of the Digital Economy Bill promises to help make that a reality. The CWU is calling on the Government to include within the new legislation a legally binding universal service obligation for the roll-out of broadband across the country.

"We are also seeking a requirement on the regulator to promote training in the telecommunications industry, because a skilled workforce is going to be critical to the successful delivery of the Government’s vision of a Digital Britain," Andy continued, adding: "We will be monitoring the passage of the Bill very closely over the coming months to ensure that it maximises the potential for economic growth, job creation and social cohesion."
