Digital Docklands

Global wireless infrastructure specialists AlanDick Group has provided the radio frequency (RF) planning, system deployment and testing for Europe’s largest public business district WiFi network.

The deployment, on behalf of WiFi network operator The Cloud, will bring public WiFi access to 75,000 workers and thousands more visitors who come to Canary Wharf on London’s Docklands every day - and will effectively turn the public spaces of the estate into one large WiFi zone.

Users of the service will be able to get online using laptops, PDAs, gaming and other wireless devices in shops, parks, reception areas, conference facilities and restaurants - opening up a new way of working at the flagship financial site and further enhancing the working environment.

Alan Dick engineers performed radio frequency coverage planning for all of the outdoor areas to ensure that high-speed 100% coverage would be available throughout the site and undertook installation and testing of all the radio access points, cabling and communications room equipment for the entire project.

Once installed, full testing, including ‘as-installed’ RF coverage, was undertaken to the satisfaction of The Cloud’s operations staff before handing over of the complete operational network.

Tony Partington, MD of Canary Wharf Management said, “Canary Wharf is proud to be able to offer wireless internet access across the entire estate and to be Europe’s biggest WiFi enabled business zone is a real prestige event for London as a whole. Mobile access to internet, e-mail and corporate networks is now available wherever you are on the site, whether sitting in a park, restaurant or conference centre. As one of the financial hubs of the world continual access to information is vital to business and this implementation makes it a reality.”
