Huawei appointed as China Telecom supplier for IMS video telephony services

Huawei Technologies, provider of next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has announced that China Telecom selected Huawei as the sole vendor to provide its IMS-based EV-DO video telephony (VT) solution.

This unique solution will enable the operator to launch mobile video phone services for 40 million subscribers nationwide. Over 400,000 users of CDMA2000 in China’s largest cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, will be the first to enjoy such services. The commercial launch was 17 May.

Huawei’s IMS network for EV-DO VT solution adopted a centralised network structure, and provided unified VT platform to each packet network in different cities. This solution will allow the operator to achieve rapid network deployment and shorten the time to market.

After the completion of the new network, China Telecom will be able to offer end to end video telephony and other value added services, including multimedia ring back tone), multimedia call ID, multimedia conference, mobile global eyes, and mobile streaming media services. Especially, its subscribers can also get the miss-call notification for video calls via short message, which is technically unique in Huawei’s solution.

Yang Guodao, president of IMS, Huawei Core Network, stated: “We are pleased to partner with China Telecom in providing video telephony services to its subscribers all over the country. With our customized solutions and extensive global application experiences, Huawei’s IMS is an ideal choice for operators worldwide to raise competence through rapidly implementing fixed-mobile convergence and full-service operation.”

By the end the first quarter in 2009, Huawei has signed 81 commercial and trial contracts of IMS solution with world-leading operators.
