Reseller Win: The Oval Runs on Nortel Technology

Surrey County Cricket Club has deployed Nortel technology to support improved internal and external communications services at The Oval, home ground of Surrey County Cricket Club (SCCC) in London.

The Nortel solution provides the Oval with a converged voice and data communications infrastructure including wireless access and soft phones to enable staff mobility, hot desking and enhanced hospitality capabilities. The new system - delivered and supported by Nortel channel partner C>Ways - is designed to advance SCCC’s vision of modernisation at the Oval through a completely updated communications infrastructure without compromising reliability.

“The Nortel solution has provided a robust and resilient communications network available throughout all of the buildings in the Oval Complex,” said Carl Partridge, operations director for Surrey County Cricket Club. “It is versatile enough to support our new and expanded services and flexible enough to enable change and future upgrades with the minimum of fuss. This is critical to us as we work in an ever changing and dynamic environment. ”

The Oval’s new converged network provides a strategic communications foundation to support existing requirements as well as handle new demands at the site following its significant redevelopment. For example, SCCC has greatly expanded its hospitality facilities at the new One Complete Solution (OCS) stand. Also, the new network protects voice and data communications while still providing highly functional conference facilities. The Nortel network also enables staff to have mobile communications while roaming within the Oval Complex for increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“In addition to meeting the communications demands of a top-class sporting facility, the Oval is also operating in the highly competitive market for prestige hospitality venues and therefore a world class communications infrastructure is critical,” said Tony Bailey, vice president, UK and Ireland Channels, Nortel. “Nortel has extensive experience in these areas and we are pleased to have been able to help the Surrey County Cricket Club meet all of its communications objectives.”

“C>Ways worked alongside Surrey County Cricket Club in order to establish the overall technical requirements of the complex,” said Nick Jackson, managing director, C>Ways. “By listening to the needs of the SCCC and compiling information through extensive user perception interviews, we were able to design a network which satisfied the strategic requirements of all departments within the complex.”

The system comprises an upgrade to the existing network in one building and a completely new network for the OCS stand. At the core of the network lie Nortel’s Ethernet 380 fibre aggregation Switch, Ethernet Switch 470, 460 and Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 series.
