Smart Move for MBO Team at INS Sudlows

A management team led by John Collins and Chris Dummet, has completed the buy-out of INS Sudlows Ltd., a Salford based design and installer of Structured Cabling Systems and Optical Fibre Networks.

Vendor, Brian Hay, sold to the management team which, in addition to John and Chris includes, Ken Leah and Darren Taylor

INS Sudlows history began in the early 1920’s as A.E Sudlows, one of the regions first electrical firms. In fact the company is officially known as the second oldest electrical firm in the North West and one of the founding firms to join, the then, newly created ECA (Electrical Contractors Association)

Brian Hay, after a number of years in senior executive’s roles for Pirelli cables, founded his own company, INS, in the early 1990’s to exploit the rapidly developing market of data cabling and fibre technology. By combining the design knowledge and expertise of INS with the respected engineering skills of Sudlows, Brian, who owned INS, acquired Sudlows in 1991 to create INS Sudlows Ltd.

The deal brought together an all Manchester professional team comprising lead advisors Kevin Simmons and Jenny Banks of Chadwick Corporate Finance, funding by Marie Wood at The Co-Operative Bank, legal advice from Kate O’Brien and Anoushka Nanji at Halliwells and tax advice from Andrew Pollock. Financial due diligence was provided by Andy Sumner at Haines Watts and James Perkins at Berg Legal advised the bank.

Commenting on the deal, managing director John Collins says: “Having been instrumental in the firm’s success over the last few years, it is a very exciting time for this team to be taking the helm. The networking and cabling industry is highly complex and our client list reflects our eminent standing in the market. We plan

to increase our presence in the sectors of health, education, commercial and government where we already enjoy a high profile.”

Operating from Salford, Greater Manchester, INS Sudlows Ltd has a turnover of £3.5m, employs 60 industry specialists and has an impressive client list which includes: Cap Gemini, Enterprise, Greater Manchester Constabulary, BT, Halliwells, Mersey Care NHS Trust and the University of Manchester.

Kevin Simmons, lead advisor says: “This was almost the perfect deal; a great professional team working well together to provide timely and pertinent advice and a well-organised and impressive management team. We wish them continued success going forward in a fascinating industry sector.”
