Star billing for Carlisle telecoms team

Staff at a Carlisle-based telecoms firm are being held up as national role models on how to create a ringing business success. International electronics giant Samsung has this month placed Online Systems in its "star chamber" of Britain's top ten customer service providers.

It means that the Lakeland company has trumped hundreds of other UK phone system installers by proving that its personnel are among the best qualified in the country.

According to Online Systems MD David Newstead, the accolade is a "fantastic tribute" to its engineering staff, and their training achievements across a range of modern telecom technologies.

Formed in 1992, Online Systems has grown to become the largest independent designer and installer of business telephone systems in the North West. Its customers include many well-known Cumbrian corporate names, as well as major companies and organisations outside the county.

In addition, Online Systems has developed a special expertise in developing telecom systems for schools, local authorities, and professional practices such as doctors and lawyers.

From the outset, said David,, the firm has placed a great emphasis on keeping personnel up to speed on the fast-changing world of voice and data systems.

Engineering staff in particular, he commented, regularly attend external training courses in installing and maintaining telecom networks, and their integration with computer systems such as Microsoft.

Recently, the company's customer service reputation also won it the official approval of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce as the preferred telephone systems supplier to its 1000-plus members.

Although the company has achieved "top performer" status with a number of other major suppliers with which its deals, said David, the Samsung top-ten listing was a cause for special celebration:

"We are already what is known as a Samsung "platinum supplier" based on our growth record, but gaining entry to the elite listing depends on a company's commitment to training," he said.

"The top table is designed to show other firms how investing in staff development can put you in a stronger position for competing as a service provider - and I think we can be proud that it's Cumbrian people power which is setting the national standard," he added.
