And he watched Mick Jagger closely as he strutted his stuff on stage at what used to be The Millennium Dome – for business adviser Steven fronts a tribute band called Jagged in his spare time.
“When I am on stage I am Sir Mick,” he said.
He was selected to receive the much-sought-after tickets because of Pennine Telecom and a scheme run by O2 called RAOK (Random Acts of Kindness).
O2 randomly selected a dealer – Pennine Telecom – and one of its customers – Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry – and Steven’s name popped up.
“I think the word is gobsmacked,” said Steven. “I had never been to the O2 Stadium before so it was an experience. It was brilliant and I'm still floating!
“I live and breathe the Stones and love fronting the tribute band. I have a wig and make-up so when I am up there on stage I am Sir Mick.”
Steven (51) only started singing six years ago after he was made redundant from his job as an IT manager. “I watched a band practising in a pub and I was fascinated. I did some backing vocals for them and then started doing my Mick Jagger act to backing tapes.
“I did a gig with ‘Elvis Presley’ and we went down a storm so I decided to start my own Stones tribute band.
“There are five of us in the band with members from Rotherham, Sheffield and Leeds and I am Barnsley-based. We play all over South and West Yorkshire and have a lot of fun. I enjoy strutting my stuff and my favourite number is Little Red Rooster.”
Steve now works as a business adviser for the West Yorkshire Enterprise Agency Ltd, an offshoot of the Mid Yorkshire Chamber. Pennine provide the chamber with a fleet of mobile phones.
