THUS Extends Relationship with the University of Glasgow

THUS has renewed and upgraded its existing contract with the Scottish regional educational network ClydeNET Consortium, to deliver a resilient National Ethernet Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting the University of Glasgow to 12 higher and further education colleges throughout the West of Scotland. The network enables remote access and greater collaboration between users of the ClydeNET network, allowing students to take ownership of the way they learn.

The Consortium wanted to embrace online multimedia environments to supplement traditional learning tools as well as providing better support for online collaboration. With several thousand users accessing the network remotely, ClydeNET’s communication solution needed to be able to cope with high volumes of traffic while maintaining performance speeds and connectivity.

The bespoke solution designed by THUS offers users high capacity, robust access to lead partner, the University of Glasgow’s central network over THUS’ National Ethernet service. A secondary back-up network maintains connectivity in the event of any service interruption on the primary network. Delivered via a virtual Local Area Network (vLAN) the solution allows the Consortium to dedicate additional capacity to its users.

Linda McCormick, Executive Director at ClydeNET commented: “Our students increasingly expect access to online networking and multimedia resources. By providing new learning methods such as virtual learning environments, ClydeNET will empower students to achieve their goals, take ownership of their studies and define their own learning strategies. The solution THUS has delivered supports this objective by providing the required higher bandwidth at our two hub sites and across the other 12 sites on the network. We also have the option to support new technologies, such as videoconferencing, as well as the ability to connect additional sites in the future as the students’ needs develop.”

Phil Male, Chief Operating Officer, THUS plc said: “The University of Glasgow is one of our longest standing customers and this contract upgrade recognises the quality of the service and value of the solutions that THUS has provided over the years. Our experience in the education sector and strong relationship with the ClydeNET Consortium has enabled us to deliver a solution that not only meets current needs, but also provides the ability to develop further capabilities in the future.”
