Trapped Chilean Miners used NEC phone system to stay in touch

Shortly after the accident at the now famous San Jose mine in Chile, an NEC dealer provided an NEC (Nitsuko TX-824) phone system free of charge.

This enabled the miners to speak to their families 24 hours a day, providing an invaluable link to their loved ones and a great sense of moral support.

Due to the narrowness of the 700 metre pipe that was also used for food, water and medical supplies, a single line terminal had to be used.

The system used a Hotline feature providing an instant connection to ground level without the need to dial.

Andrew Cooper, Sales Director of NEC in the UK said, ‘To have an NEC product involved in helping out in this incident makes us very proud.’

‘From NEC’s perspective, to play such a small but yet vital role in this incredible escape story is one again a testament to NEC’s product reliability and resilience. Proving no environment is too extreme for NEC as once again we deliver when it matters most.’
