LG U400

Networks & Network Services
It’s good to see an alternative to the usual rectangular five-way navigation: LG is offering an iPod-like jog wheel on the U400, not least because it’s positioned as a music phone.
So it’s a bit chunkier and a bit funkier than the Chocolate phone, it’s 3G, there’s a soft key for the award-winning 3 Player (as with many of LG’s phones, the U400 is exclusive to 3 in the UK) and the music software is good at downloading tunes and creating playlists – there’s also a facility for ‘scratching’ while you play music (if you need that explaining, this phone probably isn’t for you).
The U400 has a microSD card slot and supports the A2DP Bluetooth profile for wireless stereo headsets – the headphone remote also contains a standard 3.5mm jack for your own ‘phones. Playback is good, with bags of bass and little distortion at max volume. The jogwheel works well enough, better than on the i300, though Apple has set the bar pretty high here and the U400’s dial is a bit small – it’s easy to skip past the required selection. It doubles as a five-way joypad, too.
• Not quite a Walkman phone, but still a good competitor.
