Look and Feel:
Mostly metallic silver plastic – lighter than you’d expect. Flip keypad panel dominates first impressions: Quite comfortable in the hand, but thick when the keypad is flipped up. Not especially stylish.
7/10

Externals:

Small video camera lens on front, main camera on rear under lens cover. Side keys are keypad lock, dedicated music player, camera shutter, Back button (duplicates back key) plus clickwheel.
8/10

Keyboard:

Backlit thumb keypad is very good, with well distinguished keys. QWERTY keyboard under the flip is also backlit, gets all the typewriter keys on to four lines though keys are very small..
7/10

Display:

Impressive TFT touchscreen – works when flip is open, touchscreen mode disappears when closed.
8/10

Memory:

Good – 80MB on board, plus a hot-swappable Memory Stick Duo card supplied (64MB supplied).
8/10

Camera:
Looks like the excellent 2mp camera from the K750, W800, W810 etc. Super still images, but video is disappointing.
8/10

Email:

POP3 support on board; can also do all major push email protocols, including Blackberry, but that requires extra software not in the box.
7/10

Business Apps:

Usual tools – sync, to-do, etc – and Quickoffice (reasonable combined editor for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents plus file manager), PDF viewer (a bit slow), clever business card scanner.
8/10

In Use:

Good phone performance, and WiFi connectivity is a breeze. Nice balance for one-handed (one-thumbed) operation, but in fact the stylus is often easier to use than the keyboard.
8/10

Extras:

Walkman MP3 player (speakers a bit weedy, though). A couple of great games. USB Desk Stand is very useful.
7/10

WE LIKE:

• Connectivity – 3G, WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, USB 2.0
• Touchpad TFT display with 240x320 pixel resolution
• Conventional keypad plus QWERTY keyboard

WE DON’T LIKE:
• QWERTY keys a bit too small for manly thumbs
• User interface is not always user-friendly
• Flip down keyboard cover (works ok but feels dated)

Overall:
An excellent, power-packed smartphone … but you either love or hate it. A real ‘Try before you buy’.
