Business Post reports that Openreach says it has had a good response from men to the recruitment drive, it was disappointed so few women came forward.
The business said it had just nine female engineers in Wales – just two to three per cent of the total.
John Thornhill, Openreach’s regional director for Wales, said: “We are in the process of recruiting 137 new engineers. That is taking place in two phases, the first of which was announced last month involved 67, and we have just increased that in the last 10 days to 137 across Wales.
“That figure is skewed towards north, west and mid Wales and more rural areas where the engineers will work in the exchanges, install broadband for customers and work on overhead lines.”
He added: “I want to increase the level of interest from female engineers and ethnic minorities.”
Mother of two Michelle Wallo, 30, of Conwy, swapped her job in a BT customer services call centre in Colwyn Bay to train as an engineer.
She said: “I love everything about the job. I love working outdoors. I love helping customers and meeting lots of people.”
