The EU DRD requires all operators within the EU to retain the IP communications data of all its subscribers for up to 18 months for use in the event of a criminal investigation. Fixed and mobile telecommunications operators were already required to retain telephony data, and now all communications operators, which include ISPs, must also retain IP data relating to the details of their subscribers’ communications.
The volumes of IP data generated can be up to 25 times greater than telephony data, which means that operators’ existing data retention solutions may not be adequate to comply with the Directive. CopperEye’s IPRS will allow operators to add IP data retention capabilities to their existing solutions without having to build an entirely new system. The IPRS will integrate directly into legacy systems so that the operator can avoid building a bespoke upgrade or procuring a new standalone IP solution, which will drive high implementation and maintenance costs as well as risking that it may not comply with the Directive.
