Gartner Places Nortel Microsoft and Alcatel in Lead Positions for UM Market

Nortel is basking in Gartner glory this morning after the analyst firm placed them in a lead position in their review of the unified communications market.

According to the Gartner report, "The Leaders quadrant contains vendors selling comprehensive and integrated UC solutions that directly, or with well-defined partnerships, address the full range of market needs. These vendors have defined migration and evolution plans for their products in core UC areas and are using their solution sets to enter new clients into their client roster, and to expand their footprint in their existing client base in new function areas."

The Gartner report also stated, "UC offers the ability to significantly improve how individuals, groups and companies interact and perform. UC enables multiple communication channels to be coordinated. Key technologies include Internet Protocol (IP)-PBX, voice over IP (VoIP), presence, e-mail, audio and Web conferencing, videoconferencing, voice mail, unified messaging and instant messaging (IM)."

Nortel says their unified communications solutions allow users to experience streamlined communications within their business application by bringing voice, data and video together into a single integrated solution. From Nortel's cornerstone product - the Communication Server (CS) 1000 - to the advanced multimedia integration of Multimedia Communications Server (MCS) 5100, Nortel continues to innovate and build off its leadership position in unified communications.

Nortel and Microsoft recently celebrated the one year anniversary of the Nortel and Microsoft Innovative Communications Alliance, a unique partnership designed to transform business communications by combining Nortel's network quality and Microsoft's reliable unified communications software. Today, businesses are embracing the benefits of the alliance and have purchased and are deploying more than 430,000 licenses for joint solutions. As such, these customers are enhancing their business communications for improved productivity and to help lower total cost of ownership.
