Glasgow leading Scottish digital revolution

Glasgow is winning the gigabit city race in Scotland. Over 11,000 homes and businesses across the city have access, or are imminently due to be connected, to Hyperoptic’s full fibre network, which enables gigabit broadband speeds of 1,000Mbps - over 27x faster than the average speed a UK consumer receives today.

Hyperoptic runs its own dedicated Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which is why it can offer symmetrical gigabit broadband services. It announced it would be expanding its full fibre network to Glasgow in 2015. Since then the company has invested heavily in the city via installing its services across 140 property developments.

Hyperoptic also recently signed a partnership with New Gorbals Housing Association to extend its services across its portfolio, giving its social housing tenants access to the fastest and most reliable connectivity in the UK.

New Gorbals Housing Association Chairperson Linda Malone said: “With so many essential services moving online, it is crucial that our tenants have affordable and reliable Internet access. Hyperoptic’s installation of their full fibre network will give our tenants and residents the option to sign up to superfast broadband on a flexible month by month basis. We understand the importance of digital inclusion in our community, and this is part of our support to local people to access digital services.”

Edinburgh is also making headway in cementing its Gigabit City status. Hyperoptic has, or is currently installing, its full fibre infrastructure across the city, across over 40 property developments.

Sharon Maybury, National Manager, Hyperoptic: “Whereas other broadband companies have announced that they plan to build gigabit-capable networks in Scotland, our services are already live and we have ambitious plans to increase our coverage, quickly.”

Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy & Connectivity, Fergus Ewing, adds:

“Our unparalleled investment in superfast broadband is creating the digital infrastructure and the opportunities for ambitious businesses to modernise, innovate and grow. Access to gigabit broadband speeds will help Scottish cities continue to attract and retain innovative technology companies, and I welcome Hyperoptic’s commercial investment in Glasgow and Edinburgh, which reaffirms our approach to Reaching 100% (R100) is working.

“We are focusing our £600 million investment in Scotland’s rural areas, while creating the right environment to encourage commercial providers like Hyperoptic to invest in our urban areas. Our approach will ensure we meet our commitment to deliver 100% superfast broadband access across Scotland by the end of 2021.”
