Mitel Adds Security to Hosted Telephony Platform

BorderWare Technologies and Mitel have announced the launch of a combined solution based on BorderWare’s SIPassure VoIP security and Mitel’s 3600 Hosted telephony platform which they say delivers the new Mitel 3600 Security Gateway and opens the door to secure, low-cost delivery of business quality VoIP services over public IP networks.

Powered by BorderWare, the Mitel 3600 Security Gateway is embedded with application layer security reducing the barriers to VoIP adoption by providing a truly secure solution for VoIP deployment over public IP networks that is more robust, less expensive and simpler to manage than standard industry solutions which operate at the packet layer. The Mitel 3600 Security Gateway securely enables and protects Session Initiation Protocol-based (SIP) and MiNET (Mitel’s proprietary voice protocol)-based VoIP signaling and transport, and sets a new standard of affordability for carrier and service provider markets.

The solution is tightly integrated with the Mitel 3600 system and provides application layer security to protect against SPIT (Spam over Internet Telephony), Denial of Service, Unauthorised Registration and other types of VoIP attacks which would easily penetrate packet-layer security devices.

“This solution significantly lowers the cost of entry for service providers wishing to offer business-quality hosted voice services for SMBs,” said Doug Michaelides, vice president, Global Marketing, Mitel. “The new Mitel 3600 Security Gateway delivers VoIP security at a fraction of the cost of more complex, generic session border controllers.”

The Mitel 3600 is marketed as a carrier-grade communications system that allows service providers to displace traditional key systems in small businesses (five to 50 employees) with a hosted service that is simpler to use, lower cost, more flexible and easier to manage that customer premise solutions.

In the UK the Mitel 3600 is gaining traction as a viable hosted solution and its most high profile proponent is reseller ATC who recently took over distributor Rocom.
