MZA Registers 5% Slump in UK PBX Sales

MZA today releases its latest figures on the PBX and IP PBX market in the UK in its publication ”The UK Quarterly Corded PBX and IP PBX Report”.

The report shows that the total market in Q3 2008 (period July to September 2008) registers a decrease of 5% compared to the same quarter in 2007, reaching just over 723 thousand extensions. Volumes decline by 9% in the below 100 extensions market, while growth in the above 100 extensions market slows to just 1%.

The heaviest loss is to be seen in the smallest market segment (systems of between two and ten extensions, excluding Micro PBXs), which drops by almost 20%. The 31-100 extensions market also dips by more then 15%. Losses are repeated in the above 100 extensions markets, with the exception of the 1001+ segment, which is weighted this quarter by deployments in some specific accounts. The heaviest loss is attributable to the 101 to 250 extensions market, with percentage decline rates decreasing in each respective larger segment after that.

It’s close at the top of the UK market again this quarter. With a 15% market share, Nortel continues to lead the UK’s PBX market, while Avaya moves into second position, also with 15%, and Cisco takes third position. All three manufacturers register weaker sales this quarter compared to Q3 2007.

The report shows Panasonic as the leading manufacturer in the below 100 extensions category, followed by Nortel and Mitel Networks.

In the above 100 extensions market, Cisco retains leadership position, followed by Avaya and Siemens. As in the previous quarter, Siemens continues to strengthen its position in this area of the market.

IP Extensions Market

In Q3 2008, 45% of extensions deployed at the desktop in the UK are IP, compared to 38% in Q3 2007. In percentage terms, IP continues to grow at a higher rate in the below 100 extensions segment, where volumes increase by 19% compared to 13% in the above 100 extensions segment. IP extensions account for 24% of all extensions being sold in the below 100 extensions market, up from 18% in Q3 2007. Meanwhile, over 70% of extensions in the above 100 extensions market are deployed as IP.

Cisco represents around 30% of IP extensions in the UK, while Mitel Networks keeps its second position this quarter with a share of more than 20%. In the below 100 extensions market, Mitel Networks is the leading vendor for IP extensions representing 29% of IP extensions sold in this area of the market. Cisco is in second position here, with a share of more than 20%, and the company continues to lead in the above 100 extensions market by a significant margin.
