No overtime for connected Britain: comms will dictate our working future, says teliqo

It should not be a shock that we are becoming super-connected citizens states Russell Lux, teliqo, as a study of British people’s smart phone habits reveals that the average worker is spending an extra two hours a day taking work-related calls and answering emails.

“There’s no longer such a thing as overtime – it is an out-dated concept,” said Lux, Commercial Director at teliqo. “When you consider that this study found that more than 90 per cent of office workers have an email-enabled phone, not to mention other devices such as tablets, today’s working day is no longer 9 to 5.

“Whether it’s personal or work-related, we are expected, and expect to be, connected 24/7. With the emphasis growing on customer service and businesses investing more in technology resources to gain competitive edge, it’s a given that the lines are blurring.”

An earlier study by Virgin Media Business found that almost two thirds of CIOs believe that the desk telephone is the most likely office technology to become obsolete within the next five years. Lux said: “Corporate telephony is evolving, and the mobile is fast becoming simply an extension of your office. The mass integration of both into one platform is imminent. Today’s findings further proves that when you’re out, you’re in, no matter what device you pick up.”

He concluded: “With the continued focus on employee productivity and operational efficiency, the smart phone will have a crucial role to play in scaling businesses and meeting rising customer and employer expectations. It’s never been easier for employees to work flexibly, remotely and efficiently – with ‘bring your own device’ schemes, the introduction of 4G super-fast data services and unified communications technology ever evolving, we’ll be connected to work 24/7.”
