US patent number 7,587,433 that was issued 8 September 2009, provides a method for revertible updating. It enables the use of the same update file for both updating the device to a new version and for reverting to the previous version without the need to download a downgrade file. This reduces both memory and transport cost requirements as well as allows the cancellation of an in-progress update.
US patent number 7,599,970 that was issued 6 October 2009, provides a method for failsafe in-place updating. It enables the correct resumption of an interrupted update with no additional storage requirements. This feature ensures 100% completion of the update process and eliminates the risk of rendering devices “disabled,” which might cause substantial damages in operation costs and brand name.
