Glasgow based mobile phone recyclers, S3 Interactive, has appointed former United Nations environment advisor, Dominic Wing, to a new business improvement role.

Wing will be working with the company to boost its recycling capabilities by improving environmental auditing processes.

During his time at United Nations Environment Programme, Wing co-authored the organisation’s ‘Refurbishment Guidelines for Mobile Phones’ and guidelines for the ‘Collection and Transboundary Movement of Used Mobile Phones’. He is also a former environmental director at Shields Environmental/Fonebak, the first UK company to be certificated to ISO14001 environmental management standards.

S3 Interactive takes end of life mobile phones destined for landfill, repairs and resells them globally. Any handsets completely beyond repair are 100% recycled.

S3’s managing director, Philip Johnston said: “Dominic has been responsible for the creation of successful mobile phone takeback initiatives all over world and is a recognised international expert in the area of environmental management. He will be a tremendous asset to the management team as we seek to build on our already enviable environmental best practise.”

In 2006 Wing was appointed to sit on the UK government’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Advisory Group helping to successfully implement new European environmental laws.

Wing commented on his new role: “S3 Interactive green credentials are central to their business success. I’m looking forward to using my experience in environmental management to establish them as industry leaders and help them realise their growth plans in Europe and the USA.”
