Truphone, the mobile operator, has announced the appointment of Malcolm Myers as Chief Commercial Officer for. Myers will be responsible for building the company’s strategic relationships with major network operators across the globe, with the goal of extending its Truphone Local Anywhere service to over 20 countries by 2011. In addition his role will include responsibility for Truphone’s worldwide sales and distribution activities.

Truphone’s recently launched global mobile service Truphone Local Anywhere is a full GSM solution which they say makes it easier and more convenient for international travellers to stay in touch while making savings of up to 90% on standard mobile phone bills. The service provides consumers with local numbers and access to local rates for calls, texts and data in all countries where Truphone has operations, on a single SIM card.

”We are very excited to have Malcolm join us as we gear up to roll out Truphone Local Anywhere to key travel and financial destinations around the world. Truphone is poised to become the de facto communications provider of choice for people with international lifestyles - keeping them local as they travel around the world,” said Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone. “Malcolm’s experience in building successful mobile networks and closing deals around the globe will be invaluable in taking conversations with operators to the next stage.”

Myers was one of the key contributors in transforming Sunrise from start up into Switzerland’s largest non-incumbent telecommunications company. In addition to his role on the Sunrise Executive Management, he also created a $250m MVNO wholesale business and transformed Yallo into what is now Switzerland's largest MVNO. Prior to joining Truphoneb Myers was Head of Strategy and Business Development at MIH, acquiring 13 e-commerce companies in Europe and South East Asia.

“A service which allows customers to make mobile calls at local prices when they travel abroad and have local numbers for each country on the same SIM card, is a real game changing proposition,” said Myers. “Partnering with Truphone will allow operators to generate revenues from customers who might otherwise switch off their mobiles when abroad, and give distributors a chance to reach a highly lucrative customer base with a really compelling solution. It’s great to play such a key role in making the business a success.”
