A new report into how employees are using mobile data on their work smartphones shows a significant rise in video and mapping over the last quarter. While email remains the most predominant app, accounting for over a fifth of all data usage, both video and mapping have risen significantly (27% and 29% respectively) compared to their usage in the previous three months.
Wandera, the Mobile Data Gateway has published its second Enterprise Mobile Data Report, detailing mobile data usage for April, May and June 2014. The only report of its kind, the quarterly figures analyse mobile broadband traffic across a sample of 10,000 corporate devices from the Wandera network, including 70% iOS and 30% Android devices.
Where does my data go? The top apps for data use
•The number one app for data usage is still email, accounting for 23% of all data.
•Video remains the second biggest data user, but has seen a 27% rise over the last quarter, moving from 11% of all data to 14%.
•Social networking remains static as the third biggest data user with 9% of total usage.
•Mapping / geolocation has overtaken both general apps and browser usage to become the fourth most used type – seeing a 29% rise in usage from 7% to 9% of total data.
App traffic – an increasing vulnerability
Unencrypted traffic from apps is increasing month on month. There has been a 1% increase in unencrypted data for each of the last three months. Now just under half (49%) of all app traffic is unencrypted and vulnerable to snooping and injection, a significant risk to businesses.
Usage shows holiday season has arrived
The new report shows that total data usage is up 5% compared to the previous quarter but roaming data is up 7%. Overseas data usage now accounts for a fifth of all data. Business users are increasingly keen to stay in touch while abroad, made clear by email accounting for 32% of data used while roaming compared to only 21% domestically. This upward trend in roaming is set to continue to rise over the summer months.

“We know from the report that personal activity now accounts for 30% of data usage on corporate devices, and the rise of apps like video reflect the cross over between business and personal use. What’s more the rise of unencrypted app traffic means that security is becoming a major concern for many businesses, whether employees are using their device for business or personal use.”
