Young Brits clamour for social media and texts during World Cup

A new survey has revealed a significant increase in the use of social media by young people in the UK during the four week World Cup tournament.

Of those surveyed, 27% stated they have used the internet more during the tournament. A further 22% stated they used social networking sites more over the period, while 23% said they sent more text messages thanks to footie fever.

The survey was completed by Ci Research on behalf of several UK marketing agencies, gathering views from 500 young people throughout the UK aged between 17 and 26 years old.

Colin Auton, Ci Research director, said: “We can safely say that the World Cup has had a big impact on the frequency with which young people have used social media channels.

“The level of online information available about this World Cup has been unprecedented and the young people we consulted with represent the most prolific users of social media. They’ve shared opinions on websites like Twitter and Facebook, watched live match feeds online and debated the tournament on online forums.”

The survey has also revealed how the World Cup has impacted on young people’s health, with 28% claiming that they have drunk more alcohol and 19% stating that they have eaten less healthily since the World Cup started.
