So the gPhone here is here Jim, but not as we know it. Google have announced Android their new mobile operating system to unify all handsets and make the world a better place.
Android is an international alliance of over 30 handset manufacturers and other industry firms in a bid to create a new internet-centric open source platform that will take on the likes of Windows Mobile and Symbian, but not the gPhone that's been rumoured to be in the works.
“Today’s announcement is more ambitious than any single ‘Google Phone’ that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks,” said Eric Schmidt, Google chief executive.
Android comprises of a complete 'stack' of software for mobiles including an OS, interface, and applications. It's been designed to make things easier for developers to create apps for a vast range of handsets without having to recode for each OS each time, and keeping things the same across the board.
Issued under an open source licence, it will be made available free of charge to other companies to build their own handsets and applications.
The Open Handset Alliance has 34 members including Motorola, Samsung, and T-Mobile, although the door isn't closed to new member signing up such as Nokia.
"We want anyone to join. This isn't a closed alliance, this is a fluid effort and remains open to people who want to join and contribute." said Google.
The first handsets to take advantage of the new technology should go on sale in the second half of next year.
