The latest data on smartphone markets from ABI Research indicates that Nokia has maintained its leadership position with 40m of the 70.9m shipped in 2006 – a 56.4% share.
Motorola also had a strong 2006, driven by the success of its Linux-based devices in China, and took second position with 8.5% market share.
However ABI Research reckons Symbian’s strong position in the smartphone operating system market is under increasing threat. Symbian was estimated to have a 73% share of the smartphone OS market last year, but ABI is forecasting that this will to fall to 46% by 2012 in the face of strong competition from Linux and Windows Mobile.
