Apps - October 2013

In a constant search for the latest apps to help your business function more efficiently and safely David Dungay has been looking at some of the most innovative apps of today. If its security measures or simply hand tools for your everyday working life then you’ll find something here for you.

Hotspot Shield VPN

Wifi hotspots are everywhere and if you make good use of them when you are out of the office then you need to make sure you are protected. When you work on a public WiFi, hackers can snoop on you. To prevent that, use Hotspot Shield, which secures mobile WiFi connections with encryption. It can also help you unblock sites that the public WiFi might have blocked, like YouTube or Netflix...not that you’ll be looking at these sites when you are meant to be working!

Hotspot Shield protects your entire web surfing session, securing your connection at both your home Internet network & Public Internet networks (both wired and wireless). Hotspot Shield free proxy protects your identity by ensuring that all web transactions (shopping, filling out forms, downloads) are secured through HTTPS. Hotspot Shield VPN is available on Android, iOS, and Windows.

LastPass

Have you ever been in that situation where you need access to an important application but you have forgotten your password? Everything these days requires a password and it’s more important than ever to use multiple passwords rather than the same one for everything as this defeats the purpose. Instead, use LastPass. It stores your passwords, and will automatically generate secure ones, too. It’s free, no hassle and you can get it on Android and iOS.

TigerText

TigerText has been labelled the Snapchat of the business world. It provides a secure, real time, HIPAA-compliant platform for enterprises to communicate across smartphones and web-enabled Macs and PCs. The mobile version lets you send text messages, pictures, or files that will automatically self-destruct. You recall them at will, too. All messages have a limited lifespan and are deleted completely from a mobile device when they are no longer needed. You can also securely send and share files, including spreadsheets and PDFs. This is currently free and available on iOS and Android.

Call Blocker

Tired of those PPI calls? Perhaps your ex is a nutter. If so, get call blocker if you want to keep your phone number private or block unwanted callers. It can reject calls, forward them, or reply with an auto-text. It can also back up and manage your contact list and create a “private space” where sensitive calls and texts can be locked securely away. Free and available on Android.

Addappt

We have all had those group emails or texts saying “I have a new phone number” or “My new address is...” Addappt gives the control of your contacts details to your contacts!! It lets contacts update their own addresses on your device and it comes with a few nifty address book management features too. So although you may miss out on the comical story of how your colleague lost their phone on a night out you save yourself time and effort in managing your contacts. Free on iOS and Android.

Bizzabo

One of the main reasons to attend a business conference is to meet business contacts. Bizzabo can help. When the conference organiser uses Bizzabo, and you load it on your phone, it helps you discover business contacts at the event and connect with them via LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook. So instead of stressing about not having enough time to get around to everyone you need to on the day you can connect with all the relevant people via social media instantly and follow up at a later date. The downside is the event organiser needs to implement this into their event before you can use of it. Currently free for iOS and Android.

My Secret Folder –

Editors pick

As companies slowly begin to implement MDM strategies to help contain BYOD issues this is a good little interim measure. At only £0.69 employees could implement this easily themselves on their personal devices while they wait for ‘The Man’ to put a more robust strategy in place. It would certainly help me sleep easier at night! If you use your iPhone for work, there could be files that you wouldn’t want someone else to see if your phone were lost or stolen. Store them securely and secretly, with My Secret Folder. The folder looks like just a regular iOS folder but it enables you to store pictures, movies, notes, contacts and a whole load of other things you might not want other people stumbling on. A great feature of this app is when someone opens up the app and types in the wrong pass code it instantly takes a picture of them and stores it on file so you can see who tried to access your material. There is even a safe browsing mode that comes with the app to allow you browse the web freely. It does cost £0.69 but for the protection of all of your sensitive data it’s a small price to pay. Available on iOS.
