Among the 2020 technology trends:
1. Citizen data scientist – Many businesses are hamstrung with tools, such as Excel, that aren’t up to the task, and data that is out of date. With the right toolsets, they can be armed with meaningful data that can provide real value in the markets in which they operate.
2. Automated everything – With organisations becoming more complex, wanting to drive down costs and deliver considerably more to their customers, they need to be looking at significant automation. Enterprises need to look at every human task and ask serious questions as to its ability to be automated, moving their people workforce into more complex or high impact tasks.
3. Measuring security in terms of risk – As an organisation grows, so does its threat surface. No organisation is completely secure anymore. Enterprise-wide security becomes a combination of technology and education. But enterprise budgets are limited, so a risk scoring system needs to be applied to invest where the largest reputational, operational or financial risks reside.
4. Serverless computing – The trend for “everything serverless” will continue. Serverless computing offers an attractive proposition in terms of cost, scalability and performance without the burden and constraint of physical infrastructure. Serverless computing is a pragmatic step towards delivering agile application delivery, allowing for new features to be developed, tested and released quickly and at scale.
5. Next-generation communications – A fast, reliable, robust connection can empower business models that haven’t been achievable so far. Technologies such as full fibre and 5G will all but remove contention, allowing for even the most congested antenna to be capable of delivering content at speed. Next-generation satellite technology will bring low-cost, fast connectivity to every corner of the earth.
