In its submission to Ofcom, FCS, the trade association for the communication services sector representing companies delivering products and services by means of radio, mobile, fixed and IP telephony, says that high mobile termination charges [MTC] should be reduced to reflect actual costs and MTC rates should be reduced to 1 penny per minute.
Jacqui Brookes, FCS CEO, said: “Ofcom should continue to regulate mobile call termination rates and set the value to a penny or less from 2011; ultimately the rates should drop to zero.
“For too long new mobile entrants trying to launch their services have faced the hurdle of high MTC and now Ofcom has the opportunity to act and stimulate the market. At a stroke Ofcom will be able to assist both the industry and consumers. Ofcom must resist calls for deregulation of MTC.”
