The protectors market represented a mere 50 percent of all touch screen handset sales sold in Q1 2013. One reason for this is due to smartphones moving down the price points – assuming a consumer will be less likely to invest in protecting their handset if it is at a relatively low price point. This highlights possible potential in the protectors market, as we see touchscreen handsets dominate the smartphone market at over 90 percent of sales in Q1 2013.
Hannah Frost, Account Manager at GfK comments, ‘The total mobile accessories market has grown consistently in both volume and value across the last 4 years. This growth comes as consumers are tied into longer contracts on high end devices and so more investment is being made in accessories to both protect and enhance their existing device’.
Frost continues, ‘However, as touchscreen handset sales continue to grow in share within the smartphones market, it signals that there is still further potential for the case and screen protector segment of the accessories market to further increase sales’.
