NG Bailey commences a £1m IT services contract at Birmingham City University

NG Bailey’s IT Services division has started work on a £1m project at Birmingham City University.

It has been appointed as part of the project team constructing the first phase of the new £43m, 18,000m2 city centre campus in Eastside, Birmingham.

The new development will provide a purpose-built home for the university’s Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), together with cutting edge facilities that include a large media hub and TV, radio and photographic studios.

In addition to installing a structured cabling solution, the team will also be undertaking the low level design, installation and IP integration of a campus LAN.

Sales director for the IT Services division, Gary Pickering, said: “This is a very exciting contract and our ability to deliver both the M&E services and IT element of the contract was key to our selection.

“One of our key considerations throughout the IT works will be the extension of the existing live main communications room. The facility must remain operational throughout the extension, making it somewhat more challenging than normal.”

The structured cabling package includes Category 6A horizontal cabling, OM3 fibre backbone, the fit out and provision of numerous main and sub equipment rooms, and the extension of the existing server room.

The ICT package being delivered by NG Bailey includes IP integration of all services. This is being undertaken by working in partnership with the university to achieve full campus LAN, providing data access for the academic network, as well as a common platform integrating systems.

These include fire alarms, building management services, lighting controls, CCTV, access control, intercoms, lift monitoring plus the co-ordination of third party providers and academic systems.

The main contractor is Willmott Dixon and NG Bailey’s engineering division will also be working on the project, providing a full mechanical and electrical (M&E) package to the new building.
